Ask five companies what a website costs and you may get five very different answers. That is normal, because “a website” can mean a simple page with your contact details or a full system with logins and payments. The price follows the work involved.
What makes a website cost more or less
- Type of site. A site that presents your business is cheaper than an online store, a booking system or a customer portal.
- Number and kind of pages. Five pages with simple layouts take less time than fifty pages with different designs.
- Design. A design built around your brand takes more work than adapting a ready-made template. Neither is wrong. It depends on how much you want to stand out.
- Content. Someone has to write the text and prepare the photos. If you supply them, the project is smaller. If you want them created, it is part of the cost.
- Features. Contact forms are simple. Online payments, user accounts, search and booking add work and testing.
- Languages. A site in both English and Urdu needs extra layout work, including right-to-left text.
- Connections to other systems. Accounting software, delivery services, WhatsApp or a customer database each need setting up.
Costs that come after launch
The build is not the only expense. Plan for these as well:
- Domain name renewal each year.
- Hosting, which depends on how much traffic and data your site handles.
- Security updates and backups. See our guide to website security basics.
- Small changes and new content over time.
How to compare quotes fairly
A lower price is only better if it covers the same work. Before you compare, ask each company the same questions:
- What exactly is included, page by page and feature by feature?
- How many rounds of changes are included?
- Who owns the design and the code when the project ends?
- Is hosting, a domain and setup included, or extra?
- What happens if something breaks after launch, and who fixes it?
Be careful with a price that is far below the others. It often means a pre-made template with little customisation, or costs that appear later.
How to get an accurate number
The clearer your request, the closer the quote will be to the final cost. Our checklist on what to prepare before you ask for a quote shows what to send. If you are unsure whether you need a website or something larger, read website, web app or mobile app first.
Three common project sizes
- A simple presentation site: a few pages that explain who you are and how to contact you. It is the quickest and least expensive kind.
- A business site with extras: more pages, a blog, forms, a booking or enquiry flow, and connections to tools such as WhatsApp or email marketing.
- A custom web application or store: logins, data, payments and rules specific to your business. It needs the most design, building and testing.
Template or custom design?
A template starts from an existing design, so it is faster and costs less. A custom design is made around your brand and can stand out more, but it takes longer. A well-chosen template with careful branding is a good fit for many small businesses. Choose custom design when your look is a key part of what you sell.
Where people overspend or underspend
- Overspending on features nobody uses in the first year.
- Underspending on content, so the site looks empty or unclear.
- Skipping mobile testing, when most visitors use phones.
- Ignoring maintenance, which later causes security and speed problems. See our maintenance checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Why do website quotes differ so much?
Companies include different amounts of work. One quote may cover design, content, testing and support, while another covers only a template setup. Compare what is included, not just the total.
Is a cheaper website a bad idea?
Not always. A low price can be fine for a simple site. It becomes a problem when it hides extra costs or leaves out things you need, such as mobile layout, security and support.
Do I have to pay every year after the website is built?
Usually yes for the domain name and hosting. You may also pay for updates, security and changes. Ask for these costs in writing before you start.
